Career and Leadership Game Plan

 

Career and Leadership Game Plan addresses the challenges of athletes and coaches in their quest to win inside and outside the sports arena.  As a premier plan to impact the athlete from high school to college and beyond, the game plan will assist with personal mastery, individual growth, and professional development. Subsequently, this knowledge will positively impact the individual, their relationships, and professional performance.  As the result, each person will become an effective contributing member of the family, team, and society.

 

 

MISSION

 

The mission of the Career and Leadership Game Plan is to be the premiere program that supports improvinng athletes’ cognitive, behavioral, social, leadership and career outcomes.

 

PROBLEM

 

Transitioning from high school to college, and ultimately to professional careers often triggers hidden problems and subsequently contributes to social and cognitive barriers that impedes success.  Frequently, a myriad of previous experiences and environments transitions with the athlete. Thus, as they move through the significant changes, many of the emotional, psychological, and cognitive disorders increases, often producing damaging results and behaviors.

 

For the athlete, the thought of having to transition from college to a professional career outside of sports is daunting.  As the result of this fear, psychological disorders surface and prohibit the athletes from making sound choices about their future.  Subsequently, such decisions may not yield productive consequences.

 

SIGNIFICANCE

 

This program will be significant in the personal development of athletes in the following key areas:

(a) Individual Purpose and Empowerment: empowering the student athlete with self-knowledge, interpersonal skills, and critical thinking competencies that can be used in and out of the game;

(a1) From Good to Great: improving self-esteem and personal relationships;  

(b) Conflict Resolution: key areas of sportsmanship and avoiding conflict;

(c) Media Imaging and Personal Branding: building public relations and developing a powerful, lasting and positive personal brand;

(d) Career Development: creating  strategic academic/career goals and plans;

(e) Coaching: gaining information that can be leveraged to understand the learning styles and athletic coaching needs of individual players;

(f) Civic Engagement: improving the community and building relationships; and

 

PROGRAM

 

Phase I: Empowerment and Assessments

Purpose: To diminish personal and interpersonal barriers to success and provide the atlas to personal achievement.  To leverage moving from good to great through improving self-efficacy and interpersonal relationships.

Outcome: Participants will discover personal characteristics, barriers, and differences.  Critical thinking: be able to connect learning styles and other interpersonal traits to sports involvement and other lived experiences.

 

Phase II: Career Planning and Transitioning

Expected Outcomes: Participants will be able to identify career interests, possibilities, and develop career plans.

 

Phase III: Image and Personal Branding

Expected Outcomes: Participants will be able to leverage information and resources that will help them towards building a positive image and strong professional brand. They will be able to distinguish identity and link to upward mobility

 

Phase IV: Leadership and Civic Engagement

Expected Outcomes: Participants will be able to capitalize on personal strengths and bridge weaknesses;

 

Phase V: Adaptive Strategies and Team Building 

Expected Outcomes: Participants will be able to recognize differences, embrace variances, and increased synergy between team members as well as relationships inside and outside of the sports arena.  Participants will also be able to develop effective strategies for dealing with and avoiding conflicts.

 

Phase VI: Business and Personal Etiquette

Expected Outcomes: Participants will be able to make correct choices and exemplify confidence while participating in a social gathering.  Participants will learn how to approach conversations with individuals on all levels of an organization.

 

Phase VII: Evaluation and Discussion

Expected Outcomes: Participants will be able to voice their opinions on what program initiative met their needs/expectations and which did not.
